1) Do not engage them in conversation. Give the shortest possible answer.
2) If they prove particularly stubborn (sofa salesmen - I'm looking at you!) turn your back on them and ignore them. Just because they choose to approach you does not mean you owe them the courtesy of a face to face chat.
3) If they ignore these basic warning signs then unleash merry hell. If they can't take a hint, they deserve to have their scrotum pulled up over their head.
